There is an old saying that “birds of a feather flock together” also, that “it’s hard to fly like an eagle when you are dealing with turkeys”. What both of these are trying to say, is that you imitate the people you spend time with and that you will be no more successful than the people that you keep company with. 

If you want to be successful, it is important to have friends and colleagues that are successful. This rule also extends to those that you interact with on a regular basis. I’m not saying that you need to get rid of all your friends that do not have an outstanding career, however, you should make it a priority to get to know the people who are leaders in their particular fields. 

Having successful people in your life helps both your personal and professional development.

You have probably heard countless stories where people started a new business, but friends and family discouraged them or gave reasons why they shouldn’t do it.

This situation can pan out in two different ways: they strive, and manage to be successful despite everyone’s doubts or, you have the common scenario where entrepreneurs allow negative comments to influence them and they never manage to reach their full potential.

This is why it is important that we connect with others in a positive business environment when having a business or starting a venture. This type of environment encourages you to exchange ideas and offers you the possibility of having mentors that support and respect you.

Whether you are a sole proprietor or have employees, this kind of resource is very important. I’m saying this for a reason: being able to share ideas, reflect and get constructive criticism is invaluable. Not to mention having the friendship of someone who does not have a vested interest in your business, but is simply interested in you doing well. This is common for people who have reached a certain level of success.
